Adaptive Soccer

A community-powered soccer program for special needs players of all abilities. Trained volunteer buddies managed by professional coaches, and a sensory-friendly environment — because every child in the Bay Area deserves the chance to play.

A free program of Cupertino FC, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Part of the US Youth Soccer TOPSoccer network.

Soccer, Reimagined for Your Child

Adaptive Soccer at Cupertino FC is a free, community-based program designed for children who may not feel comfortable in traditional recreational soccer. We modify the game — not the joy.

Every session is built around your child’s pace, comfort level, and strengths. Our trained volunteer buddies work one-on-one with each player, and our coaches create a structured, sensory-aware environment where every child can participate, build skills, and — most importantly — have fun.

What makes our program different:

  • Small group sizes in a calm, structured setting
  • A trained volunteer buddy for every player (1:1 ratio)
  • Modified drills and activities adapted to each child
  • A sensory-friendly environment with predictable routines
  • Manager by professional coaches from the same licensed staff who lead our competitive program
  • Completely free of charge — always

Is This Right for My Child?

Adaptive Soccer is designed for players ages 5–20 who benefit from a more individualized, supportive approach to the game. This program is a great fit if your child:

  • Thrives in smaller, calmer environments rather than large group activities
  • Benefits from one-on-one support and consistent routines
  • Has a diagnosis such as autism, Down syndrome, ADHD, cerebral palsy, sensory processing differences, or developmental delays
  • Has tried traditional recreational soccer and found it overwhelming
  • Simply wants to play soccer in an environment built around their needs

Most importantly: your child is an athlete first.

We don’t define players by their diagnosis. We meet every child where they are, celebrate what they can do, and help them grow — on the field and off.

No prior soccer experience is needed. No tryout. No assessment. Just show up and play.

Volunteer With Us

Be the Reason a Child Gets to Play

Our Adaptive Soccer program runs on the generosity of volunteer buddies — young people who show up, pair with a player, and help them participate in every drill, every game, every celebration.

No soccer experience is required. We provide full training before your first session. What we need is patience, enthusiasm, and a willingness to meet a child where they are.

What Volunteers Do:

  • Work 1:1 with an assigned player for the full session
  • Help your player participate in drills and activities at their own pace
  • Provide encouragement, support, and high-fives
  • Attend a brief volunteer training session before your first day

Who Can Volunteer:

  • Middle and high school students ages 13 and up
  • Parents, college students, and community members of any age
  • All volunteer hours are certified and credited toward school community service requirements

This is not just volunteering. It’s mentorship. It’s leadership. And for many of our volunteers, it’s one of the most meaningful things they’ve ever done.

Adaptive Soccer FAQ

None at all. We welcome players who have never touched a soccer ball. Our volunteer buddies and coaches will guide your child through everything.

That’s completely okay. Your child can take a break, sit with their buddy in a quiet area, or leave early — no questions asked. We follow your child’s lead. Many players who start with short participation gradually build up to full sessions over time.

Absolutely. Parents are encouraged to stay for the entire session. After the first session, you’re also welcome to step away if your child is comfortable — their volunteer buddy will be with them the whole time.

Yes. Adaptive Soccer is completely free, always. There is no registration fee, no equipment fee, and no hidden costs. Cupertino FC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and this program is funded by the club and community donations.

Our recreational program is designed for neurotypical players in a traditional group coaching format. Adaptive Soccer is specifically structured for players who need 1:1 support, modified activities, smaller groups, and a sensory-aware environment. Both programs are led by the same professional coaching staff.

All volunteers attend a training session before their first day that covers: how to work with players with different abilities, communication strategies, safety protocols, and what a typical session looks like. We also pair new volunteers with experienced ones for their first session.

We do our best to accommodate every player. When you register, there’s an optional field where you can share anything that would help us support your child — sensory sensitivities, communication preferences, triggers to be aware of, or anything else. Our coaches and volunteer coordinator will review this before your child’s first session.

Yes. All volunteer hours are certified and credited. We provide documentation for any middle school, high school, or college community service requirement.
